Featured Student: Estelle Ah-Kiow

August's Featured Student is Estelle Ah-Kiow.

Estelle... in her own words:

My name is Estelle and I turned 15 on July 19th.  I am enrolled in the Immersion program at Clarkson Secondary School (Mississauga, Ontario) for about a semester.  This September, I will be in grade 10 and I will continue in the same programme.  At the beginning of grade 9 and for the 3 years before that, I went to a French-language school and I therefore always had the opportunity to practise my French one way or another.

Honestly, I think that my French class at Clarkson last semester was by far the one I liked best among all the ones I took before.   Generally, when you think of French class, you think of a boring class where grammar rules with an iron fist.  In Mme Urbano’s class (who is, by the way, one of the best teachers you could ever hope for), the atmosphere really made me want to come back for the next class, which was made lively with French songs and games.

I love the ocean, theatre, music, writing, films, reading, travel, and nature.  I like discovering new things and always adding to my general knowledge.  My favourite subjects at school are geography, history, languages and arts.  For me, French is simply the most beautiful language in the world!

Name: Estelle Ah-Kiow

Age: 15

Grade: 9

City: Mississauga, Ontario

First language: French

Favourite music:  I like many types of music both in French and English

Favourite food: Italian food and French pastries

Favourite French book: Le chercher d’or by J.M.G Le Clézio

Favourite way of practicing French: In class every day!

Why she thinks it is important to learn French: For me, learning a new language is always an enriching experience and has many advantages.  Also, because we live in Canada, a country that has French as one of its official languages, being bilingual opens many doors.

Best experience “en français”:  There are so many that it’s impossible to name just one.

The coolest Francophone country is, in her opinion: France

How she will use her French skills in the future: I hope to have a career in which I can use my French skills.

A place she would like to go: One of my dreams is to go around the world!
